Abstract

This book focuses on the methodological treatment of UML/P and addresses three core topics of model-based software development: code generation, the systematic testing of programs using a model-based definition of test cases, and the evolutionary refactoring and transformation of models. For each of these topics, it first details the foundational concepts and techniques, and then presents their application with UML/P. This separation between basic principles and applications makes the content more accessible and allows the reader to transfer this knowledge directly to other model-based approaches and languages. After an introduction to the book and its primary goals in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 outlines an agile UML-based approach using UML/P as the primary development language for creating executable models, generating code from the models, designing test cases, and planning iterative evolution through refactoring. In the interest of completeness, Chapter 3 provides a brief summary of UML/P, which is used throughout the book. Next, Chapters 4 and 5 discuss core techniques for code generation, addressing the architecture of a code generator and methods for controlling it, as well as the suitability of UML/P notations for test or product code.  Chapters 6 and 7 then discuss general concepts for testing software as well as the special features which arise due to the use of UML/P. Chapter 8 details test patterns to show how to use UML/P diagrams to define test cases and emphasizes in particular the use of functional tests for distributed and concurrent software systems. In closing, Chapters 9 and 10 examine techniques for transforming models and code and thus provide a solid foundation for refactoring as a type of transformation that preserves semantics. Overall, this book will be of great benefit for practical software development, for academic training in the field of Software Engineering, and for research in the area of model-based software development. Practitioners will learn how to use modern model-based techniques to improve the production of code and thus significantly increase quality. Students will find both important scientific basics as well as direct applications of the techniques presented. And last but not least, the book will offer scientists a comprehensive overview of the current state of development in the three core topics it covers.

Abstract

Life chances today are increasingly determined by school, vocational, university and further education. The author examines the permeability between vocational and higher education - an important prerequisite for enabling participation in education and society - in comparison between Germany and France. The focus is on stability and change at the institutional level and the influence of European educational processes since the end of the 1990s as well as their re-/productive significance in relation to social educational inequalities. Awarded the Young Investigators' Prize for Sociology of Education by the Education Section of the German Society for Sociology.

Abstract

Understanding the significance of genetic factors for our lives requires an analysis that goes beyond biological aspects. It is especially necessary to take into account how human beings relate to others and to themselves. Who we are is a result of social action and the ways in which human beings constitute themselves as subjects. Seen from this perspective, genetic medicine is a social practice that shapes how we think about us, how we conduct our behaviour and how we care for our children. This book scrutinises practices by which individuals become knowledgeable about their genes and constitute them as responsible decision makers. Abstract

This book links ethical leadership theory to the implementation of improved leadership practices, particularly in highly operational environments. It builds on the recognition that bad forms of leadership lead to declining motivation and consequently to problems in the social climate and quality of work in organizations and the personal health of employees. It is based on a qualitative study from 100 in-depth interviews using inductive categorization, retrieving deep, rich and unprompted data from a highly developed and advanced production facility. The book reviews the current state of research in this field and describes the setup of the underlying study, linking it to the author’s professional experience. It discusses the research design, its testing and its adaption to organizational practice. The book presents the findings of the study, introduces specific issues arising from the analysis, then critically discusses the interpretation of the findings and matches these with theoretical concepts. One finding of the study is that CSR and ethics are too often implemented with a focus on governance, process and reporting, without looking at leadership on all levels as the critical component. Finally it discusses the conclusions and implications derived from the findings. Overall, the book critically assesses how ethical leadership can be practically implemented in business organizations as a means of transforming organizations into better-governed institutions that exhibit ethical behavior.

Abstract

This book reports on the objectives, methods used and difficulties faced by the RAVE research projects, and presents the results and their significance for the future use of offshore wind energy in a style that is understandable for everyone. Readers are given a comprehensive and comprehensible overview of the current status of offshore wind energy research and the results of the research activities. Offshore wind energy will play a significant role in our future energy supply, yet this development has really only just begun. A large team of experts from the fields of research, industry, public administration and government therefore set themselves the goal of investigating the current and fundamental issues relating to the use of offshore wind energy. Over 100 researchers in the RAVE (Research at Alpha Ventus) initiative worked on interdisciplinary research projects with the aim of expanding our knowledge and finding application-oriented solutions for offshore wind energy. Their work has contributed to establishing offshore wind energy as a reliable, sustainable and economical long term source of energy. The Alpha Ventus test field, Germany’s first offshore wind farm, provided the prerequisites for this research. The wind farm was furnished with a large number of measuring instruments, and the over 1200 measurement parameters recorded can now be accessed in a central research archive. The RAVE initiative researchers thus have the unique opportunity of using a great amount of measurement data recorded at an operational wind farm. The data is evaluated locally at research facilities across the whole of Germany. The Authors Project managers and employees of the RAVE research initiative, copy edited by Björn Johnsen The Editors Michael Durstewitz and Bernhard Lange (Fraunhofer IWES).

Abstract

The landscape of healthcare is changing rapidly, both on an organisational and a technological level. This book gathers medical anthropologists to examine the ways that both patients and health care workers are being affected by new policies, market, and technologies. Contributors cover a wide range of topics, including vaccination, disability, migration, and self-medication, making clear that not only are changing circumstances leading to the emergence of new socialities, but they are also driving new ethics and moralities.

Abstract

The transformation of West German society in the "long" 1950s led to changes in society’s understanding of masculinity. Men who were "different" – disabled war veterans, the homeless, homosexuals – were under pressure to conform. This book tells the stories of men who were "flawed," expounds on the "crisis of masculinity," and illuminates the forces that promoted and inhibited greater life-style diversity.
